REVIEWS & ARTICLES

‘A seductive production of The Man of Mode, George Etherege’s 1676 comedy of grubby sexual politics and marriage-marketeering… swings with modish razzle-dazzle around a plush London.’ Evening Standard

FIVE STARS
‘A treat: sexy, modern, clever, laugh-out-loud funny, and as seamlessly suited to our age as to the Restoration audience for which it was written. Not a weak link in the cast… Tom Hardy’s Dormiant simmers with danger, Nancy Carroll brings a volcanic passion and delightful hysteria to Mrs Loveit, Rory Kinnear ignites the stage as the Frenchified fashionista Sir Fopling Flutter.’
Sunday Telegraph

‘Memorably catches both the laughter and the biting chill factor of Etherege’s comedy’ Daily Telegraph

FIVE STARS
‘So startling, fresh and original that it is difficult to believe the play is 330 years old. This brittle, brilliant Restoration comedy of 17th-century bad manners, loose morals and arranged marriages has been turned into the hippest, most fashionable show in town… a racy contemporary satire on the feckless and reckless… a cross between Absolutely Fabulous and Les Liasons Dangereuses.’ Sunday Express

‘A zesty, feshy show… strikingly successful.’ Daily Mail

‘An ingenious translation… the production is part of a big and welcome project: that of wiring the London plays of the past into the present. Tom Hardy is one of an exceptional young cast which includes Hayley Atwell, Nancy Carroll and Bertie Carvell. As Sir Fopling Flutter, Rory Kinnear delivers the comic performance of the year.’Observer

‘Terrifically slick and stylish… the whole production dazzles.’ Independent on Sunday

‘Rory Kinnear’s Fopling is sublime… Vicki Mortimer’s excellent costume designs and set.’ Sunday Times

‘Fast and pointed… unequivocally of the moment.’ Metro

‘Very funny and (naturally) very now.’

‘A stunningly brilliant production… Etherege’s play seems less a remote classic than a much-needed contemporary satire. A truly delirious and delightful evening.’

‘Vicki Mortimer’s stylish revolving set and the original and amusing dance sequences between scene changes bring the play bang up to date.’ London Lite
